Record the build and failing action
This guide begins after After Effects opens. The target failure happens during Advanced 3D preview, scene editing, Draft 3D, Parametric Mesh work, Cineware options, or rendering. A crash before the interface appears is a startup problem and does not belong to this fix list.
Open the About screen and record the full After Effects build. Add the operating system, processor architecture, GPU model, graphics driver, selected 3D renderer, Draft 3D state, exact action before the crash, error text, affected composition, and whether the same action fails in another project copy.
Keep the scene description specific. "It crashes in 3D" is too broad. "It crashes when I enable Draft 3D in a composition with a collapsed nested comp" can be compared with Adobe's record.
Match Adobe's 26.5 fixes narrowly
Adobe's September 2026 fixed-issue record names several Advanced 3D paths. After Effects 26.5 shows an error instead of crashing when the scene is too complex for the render engine. The same release fixes crashes involving Parametric Mesh in 2 or 4 Views before another 3D layer exists, Draft 3D with nested collapsed transformations, and Cineware Options opened immediately after an effect reset.
| Recorded trigger | Adobe's 26.5 record | Decision |
|---|---|---|
| A scene is too complex for the renderer | 26.5 should show an error instead of closing After Effects. | An earlier build with this exact behavior can use the supported update path. |
| Parametric Mesh in 2 or 4 Views before another 3D layer exists | Adobe marks this crash fixed in 26.5. | Protect a copy, update, and retest that same action once. |
| Draft 3D with nested collapsed transformations | Adobe marks this crash fixed in 26.5. | Keep the nested comp and trigger unchanged for the retest. |
| Cineware Options immediately after resetting the effect | Adobe marks this crash fixed in 26.5. | Record the reset and dialog sequence before updating. |
| Any other Advanced 3D action | The checked fixed-issue record does not name it. | Do not present 26.5 as a confirmed fix for that case. |
A matching feature name is not enough. The build and the action must both match. A 26.5 crash while rendering a heavy scene is not the same evidence as an earlier-build crash that Adobe listed as fixed.
Save a separate project copy and source record
Save a separate project copy with a clear date and name. Keep the original file and source assets unchanged. Confirm that linked models, textures, media, fonts, and plugins remain available through the existing project path.
Write down the failing composition, renderer, layer or model involved, view layout, Draft 3D state, collapsed-transform state, and the exact click or render step before the crash. Save a screenshot of any error. Remove client names, account details, file paths, and private media information before sharing it.
If you need a minimal comparison, duplicate the failing composition inside the separate project copy and remove one nonessential element at a time. Do not strip the original project. A minimal copy can show that a trigger follows one scene element, but it cannot prove Adobe's underlying cause.
Update through Creative Cloud and retest once
If the current build is earlier than 26.5 and the trigger exactly matches Adobe's record, use Creative Cloud or the organization's approved deployment process. Adobe lists 26.5 as the September 2026 release. Use 26.5 or a current later supported build rather than an unofficial package.
Before updating, compare the computer with Adobe's current After Effects requirements. Record any operating-system, processor, memory, graphics, driver, or storage mismatch. A mismatch changes the compatibility path, but it does not prove why one scene crashed.
On a managed computer, leave the application version, plugins, driver, and operating-system changes with the administrator. Save work, close Adobe applications normally, and let the update finish. Do not interrupt the installer or remove old application files by hand.
Open the separate project copy and repeat the same trigger once. Keep the composition, renderer, view layout, Draft 3D state, and scene action unchanged. Record the new full build and the result.
- If the exact trigger no longer crashes, the result is consistent with Adobe's fixed issue.
- If After Effects shows a complexity error instead of closing, record the message and reduce scene demands through the supported project workflow.
- If the same crash remains, stop calling it the documented fixed issue and preserve the comparison for Adobe Support.
- If a different action now fails, treat it as a separate trigger rather than stretching the original match.
Do not send a current 26.5 crash back to 26.5
Puget Systems reported on September 10, 2026 that one Advanced 3D benchmark can crash in After Effects 26.5 and beta 27 with error 19970. The test uses a demanding 4K Advanced 3D composition with an Environment Light and three Spot Lights. That is a narrow independent result, not an Adobe cause statement and not proof that every error 19970 has the same source.
If your build is already 26.5 or later, preserve the exact error, composition, lights, renderer, GPU, driver, memory state, and reproduction steps. Do not tell the application to update to the version it already runs. The checked sources do not provide a confirmed Adobe remedy for the reported 26.5 case.
Use Adobe's current requirements and support paths. Avoid random driver changes, registry edits, disabled security tools, bulk cache deletion, or third-party replacement files. If Adobe asks for a project or log, remove private content according to your organization's policy before sharing it.
A general application hang outside this render path has a different scope. The single-app response guide can help classify a wider Windows symptom. For another example of a narrow Adobe version-and-trigger fix, see the Premiere Camera Shake render guide.
Where OmniMend fits
On a supported Windows 10 or 11 x64 PC or Apple Silicon Mac, OmniMend can help collect and organize read-only local system and application evidence. Keep the After Effects build, operating system, GPU, driver, renderer, Draft 3D state, exact trigger, error, project scope, update result, and one retest result together.
OmniMend does not fix After Effects, update Creative Cloud, edit a project or 3D scene, install a driver or plugin, render media, or prove that one Adobe defect caused the crash. It does not support Windows Arm or Intel Mac as a host, and it cannot guarantee project recovery or a successful render.
If a separate evidence record would help on a supported device, review OmniMend's diagnostic scope or download OmniMend. Read the privacy information before sharing any report, project detail, or screenshot.

Checked September 19, 2026 against Adobe's After Effects fixed issues, release notes, Advanced 3D renderer guide, and system requirements. Adobe supplies the named 26.5 fixes, release, renderer, and requirement facts. We also reviewed Puget Systems' September 10 error 19970 report as a narrow independent compatibility finding. It does not establish Adobe's cause or repair. OmniMend added the build-and-trigger table, protected-copy checkpoint, one controlled retest, internal routing, privacy limits, and product scope.
