Confirm whether the deadline applies
Open Settings, choose System, then About. Under Windows specifications, record Edition, Version, and OS build. Under Device specifications, record System type. A screenshot can help, but remove the device name, product ID, serial number, account name, and other identifiers before sharing it.
| Recorded result | What the current support pages say | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| 24H2 Home, Pro, Pro Education, or Pro for Workstations | These editions reach end of updates on October 13, 2026. | Check Windows Update for the supported 25H2 offer. |
| 24H2 SE | Microsoft's lifecycle page lists 24H2 as the last supported version of Windows 11 SE. | Use the device manufacturer, school administrator, or Microsoft support path. Do not assume 25H2 applies. |
| 24H2 Enterprise or Education | These editions follow a different support schedule from Home and Pro. | Follow the organization's update policy and administrator. |
| 25H2 or another currently supported release | The 24H2 Home and Pro deadline is not the active version boundary shown on that device. | Keep normal quality updates current and preserve the recorded version. |
Do not infer the edition from the computer's age, purchase date, or account type. The About page is the useful record. Microsoft lists 25H2 as the current Windows 11 release, but eligibility and timing still depend on the device and any active safeguards.
Read the Windows Update offer
Open Settings, then Windows Update, and select Check for updates once. Let current quality updates finish first. Restart if Windows requests it, return to Windows Update, and record the exact wording around Windows 11 version 25H2.
| Windows Update result | What it supports | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Version 25H2 is offered | Microsoft's normal update channel considers the device ready for that offer. | Make a separate backup, connect reliable power, and install through Windows Update. |
| The upgrade is on its way, or a Learn more link appears | A compatibility safeguard may be delaying the offer. | Open the linked safeguard details and wait for the supported resolution. |
| No 25H2 offer or safeguard message appears | The visible evidence does not explain the missing offer. | Install current quality updates, restart once, check again, then preserve the device and update record. |
| An error code appears | The exact code and failure stage are needed for a useful diagnosis. | Record the code, update name, time, restart stage, free space, and connected hardware. |
| Updates are managed by an organization | Local policy may control version timing. | Stop and contact the administrator. |
Microsoft recommends waiting until Windows Update offers a feature update. A manual installer can bypass useful rollout signals and does not remove a compatibility problem.
If 25H2 is offered, make a separate backup
Copy important files to a separate drive or a verified cloud location before starting. Confirm that the copy opens from the backup location. Keep the laptop on reliable power, leave enough free storage for Windows Update, and disconnect unneeded external hardware.
Save the current edition, version, build, BitLocker recovery-key location when encryption is active, and the offer shown in Windows Update. Do not publish or send the recovery key. If you cannot locate the key for an encrypted device, resolve that before a feature update.
Install 25H2 from the normal Windows Update screen. Do not combine the feature update with a firmware change, driver-cleanup tool, registry edit, or security setting change. One controlled change makes a failure easier to trace.
If a safeguard holds the upgrade
Microsoft uses safeguard holds when a known compatibility issue could make an update fail or create a poor experience. Windows Update may say the upgrade is on its way and may provide a Learn more link to the relevant release-health item.
Record the wording and open the linked Microsoft page. Check whether it names a driver, application, hardware family, or resolved update. Follow only the stated resolution. If Microsoft says the hold remains active, wait for the fix or ask the device or software maker for its supported path.
Do not delete compatibility files, spoof hardware, force a target version, or use installation media to work around a hold. Those actions remove a warning without resolving the reason for it.
If installation fails
Record the exact error code and where it appeared: downloading, installing before restart, restarting, rolling back, or returning to the desktop. Also record the update name, date and time, free storage, antivirus product, connected hardware, recent driver or firmware changes, and the entry in Settings > Windows Update > Update history.
Run the Windows Update troubleshooter Microsoft provides, restart once, and check for current quality updates. Repeat only the supported step that matches the recorded error. The Windows 11 update-stuck guide covers progress that does not move and the evidence to preserve before recovery.
Do not repeatedly force power off during the restart stage. If Windows rolls back and still starts, protect the files and keep the error record. If Windows no longer starts, use Microsoft's recovery path or qualified support instead of repeating the upgrade.
Where OmniMend fits
On a supported Windows 10 or 11 x64 PC that still starts normally, OmniMend can collect and organize read-only system and update evidence. Keep the edition, version, OS build, system type, Windows Update wording, exact error, free-space record, and recent changes together.
OmniMend does not install 25H2, remove a safeguard hold, change update policy, bypass Windows 11 requirements, repair a failed boot, or guarantee upgrade success. The current product does not support Windows Arm as a host. Managed devices remain under the administrator's policy.
If a separate evidence record would help on a supported PC, review OmniMend's diagnostic scope or download OmniMend. Read the privacy information before sharing any report or screenshot.

Checked September 21, 2026 against Microsoft's Windows 11 24H2 release health page, supported Windows client versions, Windows 11 Home and Pro lifecycle page, device information guide, safeguard-hold guide, Windows 11 installation guidance, and Windows Update troubleshooting. The release-health and supported-versions pages use October 13, 2026 for the 24H2 Home and Pro deadline. The lifecycle page displays an October 14 timestamp in Pacific Time, so this article does not claim an exact final patch hour. Microsoft supplies the dates, edition boundaries, 25H2 status, normal update path, safeguard behavior, and troubleshooting route.
